Kin Health raises $9M to build an AI notetaker for patients
Health tech startup targets consumer market with free app, diverging from clinician-focused competitors

Kin Health has raised $9 million in a seed funding round led by Maveron to develop an artificial intelligence application designed for patients. The startup, founded by physicians Arpan and Amit Parikh alongside Kyle Alwyn, is building a free app that records doctor visits, transcribes conversations, and generates summaries with action items. This approach marks a distinct departure from existing healthcare AI tools, which primarily target clinicians to reduce administrative burdens, as demonstrated by competitors such as Heidi Health and Freed.

The application allows users to store clinical details, share information with family or friends, and track questions for future appointments. Kin Health plans to monetise the platform through referrals to specialists and laboratories, mirroring the business model of GoodRx, where the founders previously held executive roles. The company intends to keep the app free indefinitely, relying on commission-based revenue from service referrals rather than charging users directly.

Doug Hirsch and Trevor Bezdek, co-founders of GoodRx, serve as founding partners and executive chairmen at Kin Health. The seed round also attracted investment from Town Hall Ventures, Eniac Ventures, Flex Capital, Foundry Square Capital, Pear VC, and The Family Fund. Additional participants included angel investors Jay Desai, Nabeel Quryshi, Alex Cohen, and Saharsh Patel, alongside more than 30 physicians.

To ensure accuracy, Kin Health employs specialised medical models for transcription and utilises a multi-stage processing algorithm. This system converts raw transcriptions into clinical narratives before generating user-facing summaries. The company states that it evaluates outputs at various stages to maintain precision, while also addressing challenges related to regional accents and speech impediments such as speaking with a sore throat or wearing a mask.

Privacy remains a central consideration for the platform. Although the tool is not HIPAA-certified as it serves patients directly, Kin Health adheres to strict privacy standards, encrypting all patient data and keeping summaries private by default. The company aims to integrate data from additional health sources, including physicians’ notes from electronic health record systems, later this year.

The broader market for AI notetaking devices in the United States generated over $600 million in revenue last year, according to a Menlo Ventures report. However, the healthcare sector approaches AI with caution due to concerns regarding data security, accuracy, and the potential for hallucinations. Dr Rebecca Mishuris of Mass General Brigham emphasised that clinicians must review AI-generated notes, as responsibility for documentation remains with the clinician.

Natalie Dillion, a partner at Maveron, highlighted the strategic advantage of Kin Health’s patient-centric model. She noted that provider-side tools often require patients to coordinate their own treatment actions, whereas Kin Health is built to travel with users between specialists and systems. This independence from any single health network or electronic health record relationship positions the app to serve the consumer directly, offering a potential distribution advantage in the market.
