The iOS 27 beta pretty much confirms that an Apple foldable is happening
Developer betas reveal framework references consistent with multi-screen devices

The inaugural developer beta of iOS 27, released on 8 June 2026, contains specific code references that strongly suggest Apple is preparing its operating system for a foldable device. Developer Sam Henri Gold identified technical indicators in the iOS 27 frameworks, including terms such as "foldState" and "angleDegrees," as well as language regarding the total number of built-in displays on the host device. These references were confirmed by 9to5Mac and were not present in the previous iOS 26 iteration.

The presence of these technical markers indicates that the operating system is being optimised for a form factor that deviates from the traditional single-screen smartphone. This development aligns with earlier signals from the company, including the experimental iPhone Air that debuted last year, and precedes the anticipated announcement of the iPhone Fold later this year.

Further supporting the case for new hardware, Apple’s developer State of the Union announced support for resizing iPhone apps within macOS’ mirroring feature and on iPad. Analysts view this software adjustment as preparation for a new iPhone hardware design that would require flexible application layouts across different screen configurations.

The software update follows significant corporate developments, including Apple’s settlement of a $250 million federal lawsuit regarding false advertising claims about artificial intelligence features. The litigation stemmed from delays in rolling out promised capabilities for iPhone 15 Pro and newer devices, with the company admitting delivery would take longer than initially projected.

iOS 27 compatibility extends to the iPhone 11, while iPadOS 27 drops support for older models. The final release of macOS 27 is scheduled for autumn, following a public beta in July, a timeline that coincides with market expectations for the introduction of the foldable iPhone.
