How to turn off Instagram’s new Instants feature and retract photos you accidentally shared
Meta-owned platform’s automatic sharing defaults spark frustration and privacy concerns

Instagram has globally released a new feature called 'Instants', designed for sharing authentic, disappearing photos. The feature automatically sends captured images to a user's 'Friends' list by default, leading to frustration and accidental shares among users accustomed to curating content before posting. Meta provides an 'undo' option immediately after sending, but many users are seeking ways to disable the feature entirely or temporarily stop receiving Instants via settings adjustments.

When users first access the feature by tapping the mini photo stack in the bottom-right corner of their inbox, they are presented with an introduction stating that photos disappear, there is no viewers list, and reactions are private. The interface includes a toggle beneath the shutter button allowing users to switch the recipient list from 'Friends' to 'Close Friends'. However, the default setting remains 'Friends', and the app does not explicitly alert users that tapping the shutter button immediately sends the captured image to that list.

This instant-send mechanism has clashed with user expectations on a platform traditionally associated with careful content curation. Many users have reported accidental shares of images intended for private viewing or later editing, citing the lack of a clear preview step as a primary source of confusion. The abrupt nature of the sharing process has raised privacy concerns among those who did not intend to distribute the photo to their broader friend group.

To address these issues, Meta has introduced an 'undo' option that appears beneath the shutter button immediately after an Instant is sent. This allows users to retract the photo before recipients view it. Additionally, users can delete an Instant from their archive, accessed via the four-box icon at the top right of the camera interface, to unsend it to friends who have not yet opened it.

For users wishing to avoid the feature entirely, Instagram offers a configuration option within the settings menu. By navigating to their profile, opening the three-line menu, and selecting 'Content Preferences', users can toggle 'Hide Instants in Inbox'. This action removes the feature from the inbox interface and prevents users from seeing any Instants sent by others. Alternatively, users can temporarily pause incoming Instants by holding down the pile of Instants in their inbox and swiping right.
