Google unveils Gemini Intelligence and Googlebooks laptops ahead of I/O 2026

Ahead of the annual Google I/O 2026 conference, the technology giant revealed a comprehensive suite of new features and products through its second annual Android Show livestream. The announcements, made on Tuesday, focus heavily on Gemini Intelligence, an agentic AI system designed to integrate deeply across Android, ChromeOS, Wear OS, and Android Auto. This system aims to automate proactive tasks such as booking trips and managing shopping lists while maintaining user control through confirmation prompts.

A significant hardware component of this strategy is the new Googlebooks laptop line, a platform distinct from the digital library service. Developed to unify ChromeOS and Android, these devices are built specifically for the Gemini Intelligence ecosystem. The company has confirmed that major manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo will produce the first units, with a scheduled release for the autumn. This move mirrors Microsoft's earlier Copilot+ initiative but arrives with a distinct focus on seamless interoperability between the laptop and Android phones.

Software updates for Android 17 introduce several novel features aimed at enhancing user experience and intentionality. Among the highlights are 3D Noto emojis and the Rambler speech-to-text tool, which is engineered to remove filler words and clarify speech mid-sentence. Perhaps most notably is the Pause Point feature, which introduces a ten-second delay when launching time-consuming applications to encourage users to consider their intent before proceeding. The company states that disabling this feature entirely will require a device restart.

Security enhancements form a critical pillar of the announcement, addressing growing concerns regarding agentic AI and digital privacy. Google introduced dynamic signal monitoring to detect suspicious app behaviour, such as icon changes or the abuse of accessibility permissions. Furthermore, the operating system will offer stronger protections against spoofed financial calls, partnering with institutions like Revolut, Itaú, and Nubank to verify caller identity and automatically terminate fraudulent calls.

Interoperability with rival ecosystems also received a major upgrade, with Google announcing improved wireless data transfer between iOS and Android devices. This includes the ability to transfer passwords, photos, messages, and even eSIMs. Additionally, Quick Share will gain compatibility with Apple's AirDrop, while a new QR code generation feature will allow Android users to share information with iOS devices via the cloud. These changes are designed to lower the barrier for users switching between platforms.

Updates to key applications and automotive interfaces round out the preview. Instagram has been fully optimised for Android tablets with new editing tools and night sight features, while Google Maps will receive Immersive Navigation with 3D terrain views. In the automotive sector, Android Auto will feature a refreshed design, spatial audio support, and Magic Cue, a voice command feature that can draft replies to text messages and order food from partners like DoorDash.
