Google integrates native iPhone-to-Android migration tool in Android 17
The new feature, available on select Pixel and Samsung devices, allows wireless transfer of photos, eSIMs, and credentials without third-party software.
Google has introduced a native data migration feature within the Android 17 operating system, designed to streamline the transition for users moving from iOS devices. The update eliminates the previous requirement for users to download a separate application to facilitate the process, allowing for the wireless transfer of data directly through the operating system.
The expanded feature set supports the migration of photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendars. Notably, the update also includes the transfer of Google Accounts, passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and eSIMs, addressing key friction points that often deter users from switching smartphone ecosystems.
The rollout has commenced on select Pixel devices and the newly unveiled Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8 series. These Samsung models were announced on the same day as the feature reveal, marking a coordinated launch between the two technology firms.
Google indicated that the migration tool will expand to additional Android devices in the near future, although a specific timeline for broader availability has not been provided. The company aims to lower technical barriers to entry, potentially increasing Android market share by making the onboarding process more seamless for iPhone users.
