Forza Horizon 6 PC Preload Files Leaked Ahead of Launch
The security breach impacts early access buyers and follows a similar incident involving Death Stranding 2, raising concerns for Microsoft's Xbox division as it seeks a major hit.

Unencrypted preload files for the PC version of Forza Horizon 6 have been circulating online since approximately one week prior to the game's scheduled release on 19 May. The incident stems from an oversight by developer Playground Games, which uploaded unencrypted data to Steam before the official launch window. Although links to the files were removed from Reddit following user identification, the 150GB dataset has been widely distributed across other platforms, including GameDrive.
Pirates have subsequently cracked the leaked files, creating versions of the title that are playable offline. This development is particularly significant given that Forza Horizon 6 is designed as a highly online-centric experience. Users reporting access to the cracked build indicate they can bypass the usual connectivity requirements, effectively allowing gameplay without a legitimate purchase or waiting for the official launch.
The leak poses a direct threat to consumers who purchased early access bundles, specifically the Premium Upgrade Bundle priced at $120. These buyers, who secured access starting 15 May, may find their pre-order benefits rendered moot by the availability of the cracked version. Industry observers note the frustration this causes, with social media commentary describing the situation as a significant operational error by the studio.
This security failure mirrors a recent incident involving the PC version of Death Stranding 2, suggesting a pattern of unencrypted uploads preceding major releases. While the exact number of users affected by the Forza Horizon 6 leak remains unquantified, the widespread nature of the distribution on less regulated parts of the web indicates a substantial breach of consumer trust.
Forza Horizon 6 is set to take the arcade racing series to Japan, featuring iconic imagery such as cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji. Playground Games art director Don Arceta highlighted the unique culture of the region, including its cars, music, and fashion, as the primary inspiration for the title. The studio's decision to set the game in Japan aims to differentiate the entry in the franchise, yet the current leak overshadows these creative efforts.
The incident arrives at a precarious time for Microsoft's Xbox division, which has been grappling with declining hardware and game sales attributed to rising prices and tariffs. With Game Pass prices having nearly doubled last year, the company is relying heavily on Forza Horizon 6 to reverse these trends and secure a major success. The leak presents a significant challenge to these strategic goals as the official release date approaches.
