Federal Ruling Enables Uiagalelei’s Return to Washington Football Program
Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei, a fifth-year senior who started all 13 games last season, returns to the Washington Huskies roster after a federal court decision granted the 2022 recruiting class an additional year of eligibility.
The Washington Huskies have welcomed back defensive lineman Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei for the 2026 season, a move made possible by a federal court ruling that extended eligibility to players from the 2022 recruiting class. Uiagalelei, a fifth-year senior, participated in the team’s third training camp practice on Sunday, marking his formal reintegration into the program after his career had previously appeared to conclude.
Uiagalelei, standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 285 pounds, wore jersey number 46 during drills, a change from the number 11 he wore in 2025. The previous number has been assigned to first-year edge rusher Ramzak Fruean. His return follows a productive 2025 campaign under first-year defensive coordinator Ryan Walters, where he started all 13 games and recorded 20 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks.
Head coach Jedd Fisch, who previously coached Uiagalelei at the University of Arizona, indicated a willingness to consider other former players with remaining eligibility, provided they align with the team’s standards. When asked last week about the potential for additional returns, Fisch noted he was unsure of the specific recruiting regulations involved but stated he would not be opposed to bringing back players if it suited the culture.
Uiagalelei’s history with the program includes a stint at Arizona in 2024, where he made six starts and 21 appearances under Fisch before the coach moved to Washington. He elected to remain in Tucson for that season, allowing Fisch and most of the Wildcats' staff to relocate north. His prior production at Mater Dei High School in California saw him recruited as a three-star prospect in the 2022 class.
The addition of Uiagalelei strengthens Washington’s defensive line rotation, which already includes Ball State transfer Darin Conley, Sacramento State transfer DeSean Watts, returning fourth-year player Elinneus Davis, and first-years Derek Colman-Brusa and TI Umu-Cais. With Walters returning for his second season as defensive play-caller, Uiagalelei’s familiarity with the system provides the coaching staff with additional deployment options for the freshmen expected to see significant playing time this fall.
