Fastmail expands infrastructure with Amsterdam data region to address EU residency demands
The company’s new Amsterdam facility allows European users to designate the EU as their primary data home, though full data sovereignty remains limited by replication protocols.
Fastmail has launched a new data storage region in Amsterdam, marking a strategic shift in its infrastructure strategy by allowing users to designate the European Union as the primary location for their email data. Previously, the company stored all accounts exclusively in the United States, with existing facilities located in Philadelphia and St Louis. The new Amsterdam site utilises Fastmail’s own hardware and software, co-located in a secure facility and managed by in-house engineers, maintaining the same encryption and security standards as its US operations.
Users with billing addresses in or near Europe were pre-selected for migration to the EU region, with an encrypted copy of their data transferred in advance. Those not included in this initial group can opt to join a queue for migration. Fastmail noted that moves to the EU may be slower than migrating back to the US, as the company must sync every email across the ocean rather than reconciling existing copies.
Despite the new regional option, Fastmail clarified that it does not guarantee data will remain solely within the EU. The company maintains a standard practice of keeping at least two copies of email on separate servers in the primary location and at least one additional copy in a geographically separate location to ensure data safety. Consequently, data is replicated to locations outside the EU regardless of the primary region chosen by the user.
The infrastructure investment reflects Fastmail’s long-standing policy of relying on its own servers rather than renting computing or management services from major cloud providers. The company stated it considered charging a surcharge for the EU region but decided against it, maintaining a single fair rate for all users. Account holders can switch their primary data region via their settings, a process that occurs without service interruption.
This development responds to growing user demand for data residency options driven by local law, compliance requirements, and a desire to keep data close to home. Fastmail emphasised that choosing a region changes where the primary copy of data lives but does not alter the level of protection, as all copies remain encrypted at rest. The move provides users with greater transparency and control over their data location in an increasingly regulated digital landscape.
