Life after Kane - are England facing a false nine future?
Policy and succession planning take centre stage as England faces attacking depth concerns following World Cup exit.

England’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup following a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta has intensified scrutiny on the national team’s attacking depth. With captain Harry Kane approaching his 37th birthday by the time of the 2030 tournament, questions have arisen regarding the succession plan for the all-time record goalscorer. Manager Thomas Tuchel faced criticism for his heavy reliance on Kane, who played almost every minute of the tournament, while other strikers such as Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney received minimal playing time.

The structural weakness in England’s attacking options is underscored by domestic statistics. In the 2024-25 season, a new Premier League record low was set with only three English forwards scoring 10 or more goals: Watkins, Jarrod Bowen, and Liam Delap. This figure was matched in the subsequent season with Watkins (16), Calvert-Lewin (14), and Danny Welbeck (13). The limited pool of senior strike alternatives includes Watkins and Toney, both aged 30, alongside Dominic Solanke (28) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (29), who are the only other strikers used by the national team in the last 12 months.

Liam Delap, who signed for Chelsea for £30m after leaving Ipswich, has scored only one league goal in his first season, casting doubt on his immediate impact. While young prospects such as Shim Mheuka, Will Lankshear, Caelan Cadamarteri, and Teddie Lamb are being monitored, none are considered immediate senior replacements. The system appears to be producing more technical players than out-and-out strikers, echoing the career path of Kane, who developed through loan spells before breaking through at Tottenham.

In the absence of a new prolific striker emerging from the youth system, Tuchel may need to consider deploying a false nine. The manager previously trialled this system in a friendly against Uruguay in March, where Phil Foden underperformed, potentially influencing Tuchel’s decision to stick with Kane during the World Cup. However, Anthony Gordon is identified as a potential candidate for this role, having been named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 European Under-21 Championship while playing as a false nine.

England is scheduled to play France for the third-place spot in Miami on 18 July 2026. As the team looks beyond the current tournament, the necessity for tactical flexibility and long-term succession planning becomes increasingly apparent. Without a clear heir apparent to Kane’s goal-scoring record, the national team may be forced to adapt its formation to maintain competitiveness in future international competitions.
