Engadget has published a detailed review testing dozens of free applications for Apple CarPlay, aiming to isolate the most practical tools for navigation, audio, and vehicle utility. The assessment comes as CarPlay has evolved from a niche connectivity feature into a primary consideration for consumers purchasing new vehicles, with the system projecting smartphone interfaces onto car infotainment screens for enhanced usability.

For navigation, the review identifies Google Maps and Apple Maps as the leading options. Google Maps offers robust features such as voice-activated destination setting and real-time traffic flow, though the reviewer noted occasional issues with location tracking and a less intuitive route preview compared to mobile use. Apple Maps, conversely, is highlighted for its conversational turn-by-turn directions and integration with the Apple Watch, which provides haptic feedback for turns and exits.

In the audio category, Spotify and Apple Music are recommended for music streaming. Spotify is noted for its streamlined interface, which the review describes as more soothing than its desktop counterpart, while Apple Music is praised for its reliability with Siri voice commands and access to curated radio channels. For podcasts, Pocket Casts is singled out for its efficient filtering and synchronization across devices, allowing users to seamlessly transition from computer to car.

The review underscores that CarPlay functionality varies significantly by vehicle manufacturer. While newer models often support wireless connections, older vehicles typically require wired links, though third-party accessories like the CarlinKit can bridge this gap.
