BYD assumes full financial liability for crashes during self-driving use in China
The manufacturer’s new guarantee for its God’s Eye 5.0 system includes no payout cap and excludes premium hikes, marking a significant shift in risk allocation for autonomous driving features.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has announced it will assume full financial liability for crashes occurring while drivers utilise its 'Urban Navigate on Autopilot' feature. The commitment, detailed during an event last week regarding the latest developments for smart driving chips, covers all economic losses for at-fault accidents, including vehicle repairs, third-party property damage, and personal injury costs.
The guarantee applies exclusively to the 'God’s Eye 5.0' driver assistance system and is available to BYD owners in China for a period of one year from vehicle delivery or system upgrade. According to the company, it will directly cover all resulting economic losses provided the driver complies with all regulations while using the feature.
As reported by Electrek, the coverage carries no payout cap and does not require a separate insurance policy. Furthermore, BYD stated that the guarantee will not result in increased insurance premiums for affected customers. This follows a previous similar guarantee BYD offered for incidents involving its Intelligent Parking feature, signalling a continued strategy to mitigate consumer risk for its autonomous technologies.
The scope of the offer is limited to the Chinese market, contrasting with the regulatory and legal challenges faced by competitors in other jurisdictions. Tesla, for instance, is currently navigating lawsuits and has altered the naming conventions of its self-driving features, highlighting the different risk appetites among global automakers.
While the specific legal mechanisms for processing claims without a separate insurance policy remain undefined, the announcement underscores BYD’s confidence in its 'God’s Eye 5.0' technology. The one-year window for coverage applies to both new customers and existing owners who upgrade their systems.
