Asus unveils limited-edition ROG Xbox Ally X20 with OLED display and AR bundle
The new handheld features a 1400-nit OLED screen and magnetic thumbsticks but is sold exclusively as part of a 20th-anniversary package, raising questions about its long-term availability.

Asus has announced the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a limited-edition handheld gaming PC designed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Xbox brand. The device features a 7.4-inch 1080p OLED HDR display with a maximum brightness of 1400 nits, an upgrade from the 500-nit panels on previous models. The screen also includes an anti-glare coating and supports Dolby Vision HDR colours and FreeSync Premium Pro for improved visual performance.
The hardware refresh introduces significant control upgrades, including magnetic TMR thumbsticks intended to reduce stick drift compared to the carbon-film potentiometers used in earlier versions. Asus has also implemented a convertible D-pad that transforms from a four-direction cross to an eight-direction pad via a lift-and-twist mechanism. Additional tactile improvements include quieter face buttons and rubberised grips on the translucent black-and-gold shell.
Despite these enhancements, internal specifications remain unchanged from the previous ROG Xbox Ally X model. Asus is positioning the X20 as a niche collector’s item rather than the new standard for its handheld line. The device is currently available only as part of a special bundle that includes Xreal R1 AR glasses, which provide a 171-inch virtual display when tethered to the handheld via USB.
The bundle is expected to launch later this year, with pricing potentially exceeding $2,000. This estimate is based on the standalone retail price of the previous ROG Xbox Ally X, which was $1,000 before recent market price increases, and the Xreal R1 glasses, which are sold separately for $850. The high price point and limited production run suggest the device targets a specific segment of the market rather than the broader consumer base.
Analysts note that the tethering of the hardware to expensive AR accessories may limit the device's appeal as a standalone gaming solution. While the display and control upgrades address key flaws in the original hardware, the exclusive bundling strategy raises concerns about long-term availability for consumers who do not require augmented reality capabilities. Asus has not confirmed whether a standalone version of the X20 will be released after the anniversary promotion concludes.
