Apple Unveils Siri Overhaul and Google AI Partnership at WWDC 2026
The Cupertino-based technology giant integrates Google’s generative AI into iOS 27, enhancing Siri’s capabilities while navigating regulatory exclusions in the EU and China.

Apple held its 2026 Worldwide Developer Conference at Apple Park on 8 June 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the company’s software strategy and corporate leadership. The event served as the final keynote for outgoing CEO Tim Cook, who announced he will transition to executive chairman on 1 September 2026, with John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering, succeeding him. The conference centred on the introduction of iOS 27 and a comprehensive overhaul of Siri, powered by a new strategic partnership with Google to integrate Gemini AI models into Apple Intelligence.
The collaboration aims to significantly enhance contextual awareness and voice capabilities across Apple’s ecosystem, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS. Apple software chief Craig Federighi outlined the update as a “big leap forward” for Apple Intelligence, noting that the AI models will now pull from both online sources and personal data stored on devices. This integration allows Siri to function more like a modern chatbot, offering expanded world knowledge and the ability to perform complex tasks such as drafting messages, organising photo folders, and managing calendar reminders.
A dedicated Siri AI app has been introduced on iOS, allowing users to revisit past conversations, while the assistant is also accessible via Spotlight on Mac. On the iPhone, Siri is prominently featured in the Dynamic Island, providing an animated interface when triggered. The update also includes a more expressive voice engine and computer vision capabilities within the Camera app, enabling users to identify real-world objects and receive related web results. These features are designed to operate primarily on-device for privacy, with secure cloud processing for more demanding requests.
Beyond AI, Apple announced several performance and interface improvements. iOS 27 will support devices from the iPhone 11 onwards, maintaining strong hardware longevity. The update promises a 30 percent increase in app load times and an 80 percent speed boost for AirDrop transfers. Safari has been enhanced with AI-driven tab organisation, grouping open tabs by topic, and a new feature allowing users to generate custom browser extensions using natural language. The Mac operating system, codenamed Golden Gate, will be exclusive to devices with Apple’s custom silicon.
The software updates are scheduled for release in the autumn but will initially be unavailable in the European Union and China due to regulatory considerations. Apple stated it needs to resolve specific regulatory hurdles to maintain its privacy standards in these regions. Additionally, the company introduced enhanced child safety controls, allowing parents to manage app usage, restrict contacts, and receive alerts for potentially harmful content detected on devices.
