American Airlines signs Starlink deal for 500 Airbus planes ahead of SpaceX IPO
The agreement covers A321XLR and A320neo models starting early next year, excluding Boeing aircraft, and bolsters the commercial case for the projected initial public offering.

American Airlines has announced plans to install Starlink satellite internet on more than 500 narrow-body Airbus aircraft, marking a significant commercial expansion for SpaceX’s connectivity unit. The carrier confirmed that the integration will begin early next year, specifically targeting the first quarter of 2027. The contract covers the airline’s new Airbus A321XLR and A320neo models, while explicitly excluding its existing Boeing fleet from the agreement.
The deal represents a substantial win for Starlink as it prepares for a projected initial public offering next month. According to SpaceX’s IPO registration filing released last week, the connectivity unit is the only business within the parent company that generates meaningful revenue. The contract provides both financial support and a competitive edge against rivals such as Amazon Leo and legacy providers like Viasat in the aviation connectivity sector.
Starlink operates a low Earth orbit satellite network designed to provide broadband internet to consumers and enterprise customers. The company currently operates a massive fleet of over 10,000 satellites. This latest agreement follows similar partnerships with other major carriers, including United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa Group, British Airways, and Alaska Airlines, which merged with Hawaiian Airlines.
Financially, the connectivity unit has demonstrated strong performance, posting revenue of $11.4 billion last year. This figure accounts for 61 per cent of SpaceX’s total sales, despite the parent company reporting losses of nearly $5 billion in 2025. The American Airlines contract adds to this revenue stream, providing a tailwind for the upcoming public listing, which is projected to be one of the largest in history.
The agreement highlights Starlink’s growing dominance in the inflight Wi-Fi market. By securing contracts with multiple international carriers, SpaceX has consolidated its position ahead of competitors. The rollout on American Airlines’ Airbus fleet will see the satellite technology integrated into the cabin infrastructure, enhancing connectivity for passengers on the specified narrow-body aircraft.
