Shaquille O’Neal urged people to take control of their personal information at a NordVPN promotional event in Times Square, saying his own experience with scammers had made him pay closer attention to digital security.

O’Neal said people claiming to be involved in a house purchase had targeted him. He described being hacked for the first time, but did not explain when it happened, what access was gained or what information was affected.

The four-time NBA champion and media personality said he had assumed an incident like that could not happen to him. He urged people to learn about digital security and said he thinks about protecting himself and loved ones while trying not to let the concern consume him.

O’Neal is a NordVPN brand ambassador. The company sells a VPN as well as antivirus, threat detection and scam defence products.

NordVPN chief technology officer Marijus Briedis cited a company poll claiming 73 per cent of Americans overestimated what traditional antivirus software can protect against. The supplied material does not include the poll’s methodology or sample details.
