Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman whose eviction became a focus of housing protests in Spain, has died, Madrid’s Tenants’ Union said on Wednesday.

Her eviction prompted demonstrations across Spain in recent weeks, including activists camping in one of Madrid’s main squares, France 24 reported.

The protests also brought calls for action on a mounting housing crisis. Abascal’s case became a rallying point for those demands.

The union’s announcement, reported by France 24, did not give a cause of death.
