South Africa and Australia open Test series against backdrop of 2018 scandal
The Durban series is the teams’ first Test meeting in South Africa since the ball-tampering scandal, as both sides face selection questions and competing demands for a response.

South Africa host Australia in a three-Test series beginning in Durban on Friday, their first Test meeting in South Africa since the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. The controversy has drawn more attention in Australian media than in South Africa during the build-up, according to Al Jazeera’s report.
South Africa are seeking a place in the final of the 2025–27 World Test Championship after winning the previous final. Their choices include whether to rest Kagiso Rabada as he returns from a hamstring injury, and who will bat at number three. The Kingsmead pitch may give spin a larger role than is usual on South African grounds.
Australia arrive looking for a response after losing a home Test to Bangladesh in August, although the series was drawn overall. Cameron Green’s injury could open a place at number five for Cooper Connolly or Nic Maddinson. The final line-up is not confirmed.
Smith has said the 2018 episode still brings flashbacks and makes him anxious around cameras. He expects hostile crowds in South Africa, but said he was accustomed to abuse at away venues and would use it as motivation.
The scandal led to year-long bans for Smith and David Warner and a nine-month ban for Cameron Bancroft. Australia opener Travis Head has also criticised former players’ public commentary on the current team, saying it unfairly targets players.
